In the simplest form, an alternative fuel is one that is not caused by the use of crude oil. They are simply fuels to replace conventional gasoline as a means of powering vehicles. Alternative fuels must be energy efficiency and characteristics desirable to reduce pollution. The 1990 Clean Air Act encourages development and sale of alternative fuels.

Specifically, the Energy Policy Act (EP Act) of 1993 gave a thorough definition of what they consider alternative fuels. The Department of Energy United States recognize the following as alternative fuels:
Mixtures containing 85% or more by volume of alcohol fuel such as methanol and ethanol denatured
Natural gas (compressed or liquefied gas)
Liquefied petroleum gas (propane)
Hydrogen
Coal-derived fuels liquid
Fuels derived from biological materials
Electricity (including electricity from energy Solar)
Of 100% biodiesel (B100)
Pure biodiesel (B100) is considered as an alternative fuel under EP Act. Lower biodiesel blends level are not considered alternative fuels, but covered fleets can earn one EP Act credit for 450 gallons of B100 purchased for used in mixtures of 20% biodiesel or more.

With the implementation of the program of alternative fuels, the third in May's request Department of Energy alternative fuels to add to the previous list. People are always looking for new ways to fight against rising fuel prices and develop fuels not only good for the environment, but also consumer checkbook.

Basically, alternative fuels such as methane, propane, ethanol and compressed gas among others. Consider some of these later in the book, but the fuel substitution is not a separate category that defines compact as an option on gasoline.

It's exciting to think that now we can power our vehicles using things such as vegetable oils, animal fats, and even wood! It reminds me of the movie "Back to the Future" Doc where the power of his DeLorean Time Machine using garbage as fuel!
