The Truth About Molecularly Distilled Fish Oil

Granted you have acknowledged the wonderful benefits of Omega 3 essential fatty acids, and you may have heard about molecularly distilled fish oil, but do you truly understand what that terms means to you? Do you realize how important it can be?

You have been advised by your pharmacist for example to never take this supplement unless it has been molecularly distilled first. The question is, did he thoroughly explain what that meant?

The molecular distillation is the only process known to scientists thus far that efficiently and successfully removes not only heavy metals, but also PCBs and many more harmful toxins. It reduces them to levels that are found to be wholly safe as far as human consumption is concerned.

Furthermore, you should be aware that molecular distillation is considered one of the more expensive purification methods. The conditions required as well as the equipment needed are not only expensive, but also difficult to maintain.

Many producers of this supplement are loathing or are totally unable to produce molecularly distilled fish oil. They then rely on using only one filtration process that filters it, but apparently does little to remove many toxins.

Therefore taking those products may create a risk to your health, even though they are a less expensive product.

chemistry: recrystallization?

I don't understand these concepts, please help. thanks

1. if a solubility of specific compound is 59g per 100 mL in hot ethanol and 30g per 100mL in cold ethanol, then solubility in water is 7g per 100mL in hot water and .22g per 100mL in cold water, then which solvent (ethanol or water) is the better solvent to use for the compound? why?

2. how does the rate of crystal growth affect the purity of a recrystallized compound?

1. The compound is more soluble in ethanol than water. But, during a simple recrystallization, you want a large difference between the hot and cold solubilities, so that once a hot solution is formed, upon cooling, as much as the product is recovered as possible.

Say you're recrystallizing 100g of product. It would take about 170 ml hot EtOH to dissolve it. Upon cooling and crystallization, you'd recover about 50g, as the cold solubility is 30g / 100ml, and you have 170 ml present. A 50% yield is pretty poor. If you recryxd the same 100 g in water, it would take 1.4L of solvent, but after cooling, since the cold solubility is low, you would only loose 3g in the liquors, giving you a 97% recovery.

Water will give you a much better recovery, and is likely the better solvent to use (assuming purity of the product is improved compared to EtOH).

2. In general, slow controlled crystal growth will give a higher purity product. As crystals form, impurities are "displaced" into the solution. If the growth occurs too quickly, the impurities become trapped in the solids.
