Do those huge, expensive, propane-fueled, mosquito-killing machines really work?

After 16 years in this house and even with a few changes of neighbours we have had this terrible mosquito problem in our back yard, especially in the perennial gardens we have recently built. We are not responsible and there's no legal way to find out who is. I'm willing to buy one of those machines if it's not just another false promise like "organic weed killer" and "lean pork".

It's a funny thing. Maybe we should take up smoking. My neighbours (who are smokers) on either side can sit on their decks in the evening and they don't see a mosquito while we get chased indoors.

Those things work well if the scenario is correct. Basically they generate carbon dioxide and have an odourant chip that work together to simulate the breath of a large mammal like a cow or moose. This attracts the mosquitos and the unit vacuums them up!

Before you run out and buy one you need to make sure that you have a place to put it where it will be between the area you want to "clean up" and the breeding ground of the mosquito's. You aren't going to draw them away from your deck area if the breeding ground is right there as well. You have to be able to intercept them on the way to you.

If the layout of your property doesn't allow this, don't waste your money!
