Owen $10.38 This self-titled release is comprised of nine songs recorded at Mike Kinsella's own home studio, using his own equipment. Kinsella also performed all the music, did all the mixing, and recorded the whole thing. Despite what many might think, it all sounds very good. Musically, this release finds Kinsella extending where American Football (his former project) was headed. Many of the guitar parts are reminiscent of the delicate tones that short-lived act displayed, and Kinsella's voice is patterned in the same generous emotional helpings. And in that regard, his voice is the carrier of the infectiously morose tales which only a Kinsella is capable of weaving. Carrying the bulk of the weight of a project via his vocals doesn't seem to phase him, however, as they are pulled off in a stellar manner and sound just as good, if not better than the American Football albums. Kinsella fans and specifically American Football fans will appreciate this, but beyond that, Owen has a wider appeal to fans of the singer/songwriter genre in general. ~ Kurt Morris, Rovi |

Britten: Owen Wingrave $27.98 Owen Wingrave, Britten's penultimate opera, is arguably his weakest. It was written for a 1970 BBC television production and has been performed on the stage, but it remains one of his least frequently performed mature operas. Part of the fault lies with the libretto by Myfanwy Piper, who provided the excellent librettos for The Turn of the Screw and Death in Venice. Based on a ghost story by Henry James, the plot concerns a young man from a military family who embraces pacifism and is rejected by everyone he cares about. To prove that he is not simply a coward, he agrees to spend the night in a haunted room, in which he mysteriously dies. The opera has little dramatic movement; it consists almost entirely of Owen's family's and friends' outrageous insults and recriminations, and his firm adherence to his convictions. The choice of topic was clearly a reflection of Britten's pacifism, and the result seems more like a manifesto than a fully fleshed out human drama. In spite of Britten's passionate commitment to pacifism, the story didn't call forth his most inspired music. The music is endlessly inventive, and while there are beautiful moments, there is little that's truly memorable, and it doesn't add up to a very engaging or moving musical drama. One problem is Britten's text setting, which lacks the purposefulness of his best work and is surprisingly sing-song. Another is the fact that the music doesn't consistently illuminate the deep psychology of the drama, as it does in almost all of his other operas. The gamelan-like orchestration is its most powerful element, and the orchestral interludes are the most interesting parts. This performance may not supplant Britten's own version on Decca, but the individual singers are consistently strong, and James Gilchrist is far more persuasive as a young recruit than the aging Peter Pears was. The City of London Sinfonia plays crisply and colorfully under Richard Hickox. Mother Superior $15.99 Mother Superior's self-titled album provides a comfortable listen for metalheads. The songs are relatively short, with unpretentious lyrics and catchier melodies than might be expected. It's the territory of early Van Halen filtered through punk and grunge attitude, with frontman Jim Wilson playing the roles of both Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth. Wilson's vocals seem slightly weak on the first couple of tracks but pick up later with earthy performances on "Such a Worthless Thing" and "Fell for You Like a Child." As a guitarist, he makes two- and three-chord progressions sound like leads. Lake Superior $12.78 The six promising young musicians who comprise Tunnel Six met while attending the International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music at the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada. They quickly discovered a chemistry and worked to interpret the members' compositions, touring parts of Canada and the U.S. for a few weeks prior to entering the studio to record their debut album. The interaction between them makes it sound like they have been playing together for far longer, while it is clear that each musician dove headfirst into bringing out the nuances of his fellow bandmates' compositions, so there isn't as much emphasis on dominating the solo spotlight as there typically is on CDs by young artists. Trumpeter/flügelhornist Chad McCullough penned the loping yet spirited "Tunnel Mountain," which features lush ensembles, terrific exchanges by the composer on trumpet with soprano saxophonist Ben Dietschi, and an understated, elegant piano solo by Andrew Oliver. Guitarist Brian Seligman's "Not Yet" simmers for the first few measures as the band builds the tension until the composer's rockish solo. Dietschi contributed the mellow "Song for Masha," showcasing his lyrical tenor sax.
